Good morning, and happy Friday. It’s hard to believe it’s already May. Here’s something good to take with you into the weekend.

A six-year-old girl is seeing the world for the first time after a breakthrough treatment restored her vision in just weeks.

Off the coast of South Africa, more than 300 humpback whales were spotted feeding together in a rare and awe-inspiring supergroup.

And at Disneyland, a small moment of kindness turned into a viral memory when a Toy Story character connected with a deaf child using sign language.

We love sharing stories like these with you, they’re a reminder of what’s possible.

GOOD SCIENCE

Gene Therapy Miracle Restores Sight for 6-Year-Old Saffie Battling Rare Blindness

Doctors at Great Ormond Street Hospital in London used a single injection to deliver a healthy gene directly to her eyes. Within weeks, Saffie could see colors and shapes she had never experienced before. Imagine the wonder of discovering the world in a whole new way at that age.

Stories like Saffie’s remind us how quickly science is changing what’s possible, especially for children and families who once had little hope. It’s a quiet revolution happening in hospital rooms and research labs.

I find myself wondering what other doors might open as these therapies become more common. What will the world look like for the next child who needs a miracle?

THIS DAY IN HISTORY: May 1, 1807

Britain Abolishes Its Role in the Transatlantic Slave Trade

On this day in 1807, the Slave Trade Act officially took effect in Great Britain, ending its participation in the transatlantic slave trade and helping push other nations toward abolition.

What makes this moment remarkable is that it came while the trade was still highly profitable. For nearly two decades, abolitionists including William Wilberforce and a coalition of Evangelical Protestants and Quakers campaigned tirelessly to end it.

After years of debate and gradual efforts, the bill passed overwhelmingly in Parliament and received Royal Assent from King George III. Its passage marked a turning point, showing how sustained advocacy and moral conviction can challenge even the most entrenched systems.

Other notable May 1st events:

1844: Samuel Morse sent the first message by telegraph

1867: Reconstruction began in The South, opening voter registration to African-Americans

1889: Aspirin was introduced in Germany by Bayer

2004: The Europe Union welcomed as members Estonia, Hungary, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, Slovenia, Slovakia, and the Czech Republic back from Communist rule and Cyprus and Malta
