Five days ago, he stood at the finish line of the same run having completed every one of its 66 miles and 42 hills. The man who organized his ICU care was there waiting to congratulate him.

Four Years After Cardiac Arrest on a Snowy Mountain, Tommy Price Just Finished the Run That Nearly Killed Him
The Bob Graham Round is one of the most demanding trail runs in England: 66 miles, 42 fells, 27,000 vertical feet of elevation change, all of it in the Lake District, all of it under 24 hours. In January 2022, Tommy Price was attempting it with his friend Max when hypothermia overtook him on Hall's Fell, just after the third peak. Max went for help. While he was gone, Price's heart stopped. Rescuers from Keswick Mountain Rescue made three unsuccessful attempts to restart it before an airlift arrived.
His body temperature had fallen to 64.4°F — nearly half the normal range. That almost certainly saved him. The extreme cold prevented his brain and organs from suffering fatal damage while his heart wasn't beating. At the Royal Victoria Infirmary in Newcastle, doctors warmed him slowly, restarted his heart, and put him into an induced coma for five days. It took months to regain feeling in his hands and feet.
He came back. First with the London Marathon, completed in 3 hours and 10 minutes, raising money for the very team that saved him. Then, five days ago, with the Bob Graham Round itself. Keswick Mountain Rescue volunteer Jonny Hulme, one of the first responders who found Price face down in the snow that day in 2022, ran the opening leg alongside him. At the traditional start and finish point, the old Moot Hall in Keswick, Dr. John Ferris, who had organized Price's arrival at the ICU, was waiting.
"I am very lucky to be alive and even luckier to be able to run still," Price said. "It was unfinished business and I had to do it to finish the story."

Athens Is Turning Its Old Airport Into One of Europe's Largest Parks. It's Designed to Keep Itself 7 Degrees Cooler Than the City Around It
Athens is the hottest major city in Europe. It once held the World Meteorological Organization record for the continent's highest temperature ever recorded, 48 degrees Celsius. It was the first European city to appoint a chief heat officer. It is home to double the population of the next nine largest Greek cities combined, and it has historically had almost no green space to show for it. The former Hellinikon Airport, which closed in 2001, has sat largely unused on 400 acres of prime seafront land in the city's southern suburbs ever since.
That land is now being turned into the Ellinikon Park, which will be the second-largest urban park in Europe when it opens next year. Every element of its design was optimized using Computational Fluid Dynamics simulations of air circulation, wind direction, and evaporation rates, with a single goal: keeping the park 7.2 degrees Fahrenheit cooler than the surrounding concrete and asphalt. Thirty thousand trees and three million smaller plants will cover the site, representing more than 520 species, three-quarters of them native or well-adapted to the Mediterranean climate.
Rest areas are designed with more than 60% shading. Running channels, misting systems, and low-consumption water basins will keep the air moist. A giant rainwater catchment system and onsite water treatment facilities will supply the park's plants without drawing on the municipal water supply. Construction recycled hundreds of tons of concrete slabs from the demolished airport. The stone finishes will use Kavala marble, Dionysos-Penteli marble, Karystos slate, and Mandras sandstone. A city that has been quietly baking for decades is building itself a place to breathe.

A Kansas Rancher Let Wind Turbines Onto His Land 20 Years Ago. They've Paid Half His Family's Income Ever Since
Peter Ferrell is the fourth generation of his family to ranch the same tallgrass prairie in the Flint Hills of Kansas, where his family has lived since 1888. When a developer approached him in the early 2000s about building wind turbines on the western half of his 7,000-acre property, the cultural pressure against saying yes was considerable. A fellow rancher helped him think it through, then the original developer pulled out, and Ferrell had to go find a new one himself.
He signed with Greenlight Energy Resources, and in 2006 the Elk River Wind Power project came online as the largest wind project in Kansas, 50 turbines producing enough electricity to power 60,000 homes. Ferrell barely notices them now. His cattle still graze as they always have, the prairie chickens still nest, and the wind royalties have paid half his total income for the past two decades.
"My family has been here since 1888 and that weighs heavily on my decision to engage in practices that can be carried on generation after generation without depleting the resources," Ferrell said. "Both the grass and the wind will be here for generations." He has two grown children and four grandchildren who love the ranch, and because of the turbines, they will be able to inherit it without financial burden.

A Las Vegas Casino Just Gave $70 Million in Company Stock to Its 10,000 Employees. $1,000 for Every Year They've Been There
When thousands of Station Casinos employees arrived at one of the company's resorts to celebrate its 50th anniversary, they had no idea what was about to happen. Frank Fertitta III took the stage and announced that every one of the company's nearly 10,000 team members would receive $1,000 in Red Rock Resorts company stock for every year they had been on the payroll. The room, by all accounts, did not stay quiet for long.
The total gift came to $70 million. Frank Fertitta III's father, Frank Jr., founded the company's flagship property, the Bingo Palace, in 1976. Several employees who joined shortly after are still there. Ida Johnson, who started in 1977, received $49,000 worth of stock, which at the current dividend payout will generate an additional $886 every year. Seven employees have been with the company for 45 years or more.
"Our father founded this company on a few simple principles: serve the local community, deliver great value, and most importantly, take care of our team members," Frank III said. Paula Barrett, who has 47 years of service and could have left at any point over those decades, described what it felt like to receive her check. "Just a complete honor," she said. "We're all comfortable. This is home for us. We love it here. We love our management here." It is a sentence that could be read as simple loyalty or as the point of the whole story.

The Montreal Protocol Was Signed 39 Years Ago Today. It Is Repairing a Hole in the Sky
On September 16, 1987, representatives of nations around the world signed the Montreal Protocol on Substances that Deplete the Ozone Layer, committing to reduce and eventually eliminate the chemicals responsible for a growing hole in Earth's protective ozone shield. Former UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan later called it "perhaps the single most successful international agreement to date." Scientists have since confirmed that the ozone layer is healing and is on track to fully recover by 2080.
The agreement was updated in 2019 through the Kigali Amendment, under which countries committed to reducing the use of hydrofluorocarbons by more than 80% over 30 years. It remains the only environmental treaty to achieve universal ratification by every nation on Earth.
