Christian Bale Spent Years Building a Foster Care Village So Siblings Wouldn't Have to Grow Up Apart
California has more children in foster care than any other state in America. Most siblings who enter the system are separated and grow up apart. When Christian Bale and his wife Sibi learned this after the birth of their first daughter, it became something they couldn't set aside. "Imagine the absolute pain and the trauma of losing your parents," Bale said, "and then losing your brothers and sisters on top of that. That's no way to treat kids."
Together California, the organization Bale co-founded with UCLA Professor Eric Esrailian, spent years acquiring land, raising funds, and designing a solution. The Austrian American Council West raised over $9 million. Leonardo DiCaprio donated. LA County Supervisor Kathryn Barger championed the location in Palmdale. The result is 12 fully-furnished housing units on a 4.67-acre property, where sibling groups will be housed together rather than separated.
"It's our job to turn their heartbreak and their pain into love and hope and a sense of future," Bale said at the ribbon cutting. The village is the first of its kind in the state. "With LA County having more kids in foster care than anywhere else in America, it's time we stand together and take a holistic, loving, and long-term approach."

Scientists Believe Australia's Red Deserts May Be Sitting on a Massive Hydrogen Energy Reserve
NThe mineral that makes Australia's outback red is magnetite, and researchers at Edith Cowan University have discovered that when magnetite reacts with hot water deep underground, it generates hydrogen gas. Hydrogen is one of the only proven clean fuels capable of powering the heaviest machinery on Earth, including jets, ships, and trains, and Australia's Pilbara region contains some of the world's largest deposits of magnetite-rich banded iron formations.
"Australia could be sitting on a massive, untapped energy reserve, and the potential is enormous," said Associate Professor Alireza Keshavarz. "There is enough hydrogen for Australia to benefit for generations, and potentially enough for us to become a major exporter of clean energy to the rest of the world."
The team's experiments exposed magnetite to water at 200 degrees Celsius under high pressure for 60 days, replicating conditions deep underground. Powdered magnetite produced five times more hydrogen than solid rock samples due to its higher porosity, suggesting that the right extraction approach could unlock production at continental scale.

A Finnish Man Found Two Viking Hoards in the Same Field Minutes Apart. It's the Largest Discovery of Its Kind in Finnish History
Kalle Lappinen was metal detecting in his hometown of Sysmä in southern Finland when his instrument beeped in the middle of a field. He dug a few inches and the detector began to roar. "With the fury of a monkey," he later recalled, "I dug through the soil, bottom moraine and cobblestones." About 18 inches down he found a compacted pile of Viking-age coins.
Then, just a stone's throw away, his detector went off again. The second hoard contained more coins plus a silver bead, a bracelet, a charm, and pieces of chopped hack silver. Together the two hoards weighed around 10 pounds, contained thousands of coins dating to the 11th century, and represent the largest Viking-age silver discovery in Finnish history.
Lappinen immediately reported his find to authorities. "A case of responsible and responsive detecting," said Eljas Oksanen, an archaeologist at the University of Helsinki, noting that detectorists reach areas professional archaeologists never visit. The discovery caps an extraordinary year for Scandinavian treasure: Norway found its largest Viking silver trove in May, Denmark found its largest last month.

Mexico Returned 48 Bison to a Desert Ecosystem That Hadn't Seen One in 200 Years
Cuatrociénegas is a 324-square-mile UNESCO biosphere reserve in the Mexican state of Coahuila, characterized by deep freshwater pools, gypsum sand dunes, and an extraordinary variety of plant life for such an arid landscape. Bison roamed here for millennia before disappearing roughly two centuries ago. Last year, 48 were brought from other parts of Mexico to El Santuario Wildlife Reserve within the protected landscape.
Bison are ecosystem engineers. Their hooves break up the ground and let water and seeds penetrate, their coats carry and disperse seeds across vast distances, their dung fertilizes the soil, and their bulk feeds predators, scavengers, and microbes when they die. "Simply bringing back a fundamental species that was there before and should be there," said Gerardo Ruiz Smith of Fundación Pro Cuatrociénegas, offers the landscape something it has been missing for two centuries.
The reintroduction joins a global trend: bison are now being returned to landscapes in Romania, Portugal, and across the American West, recognized as one of the most effective tools for restoring grassland and woodland ecosystems naturally.

NASA Unveiled the First Space Shuttle With the Cast of Star Trek Present
On September 17, 1976, NASA unveiled the first Space Shuttle at Palmdale, California, and the cast of Star Trek was there. After the shuttle's name was changed from Constitution to Enterprise following a massive write-in campaign by Star Trek fans, NASA invited the cast to the ceremony. Nichelle Nichols, DeForest Kelley, Leonard Nimoy, George Takei, James Doohan, and Majel Barrett stood on the tarmac alongside Gene Roddenberry as the Enterprise rolled out.
The shuttle never flew in space, but served as the test vehicle that proved the design worked. The franchise it was named after had been cancelled eight years earlier. Today there are over a thousand Trek episodes across multiple series, and the Enterprise remains one of the most recognized names in the history of human exploration.
