Ancient Moon Rock Discovered in Africa Reveals Missing Chapter of Lunar History
A 2.35 billion-year-old Moon rock found in Africa is changing what we know about lunar history. This rare meteorite, discovered in 2023, fills a billion-year gap in our collection of Moon rocks and shows that volcanic activity on the Moon lasted much longer than previously believed.
Researchers from the University of Manchester analyzed the rock and found it to be the youngest basaltic lunar meteorite on Earth. Its unique chemical makeup suggests it formed from a deep lunar lava flow.
The rock’s age and composition reveal that the Moon’s interior stayed hot for far longer than scientists thought. This discovery could help guide future lunar missions.
With only 31 lunar basalts ever found on Earth, this meteorite is a remarkable find that offers new clues about our closest neighbor’s past.

THIS DAY IN HISTORY: July 14, 2015
Pluto, We Finally Made It
Ten years ago today, NASA’s New Horizons spacecraft completed its flyby of Pluto, giving humanity its first close-up look at the icy world on the outer edge of the solar system. After a decade-long journey and a quick 7,750-mile pass, the spacecraft snapped crystal-clear images of Pluto and its moons, including Charon, Hydra, and Styx.
New Horizons discovered vast ice plains, towering mountains, and evidence of cryovolcanoes, a frozen geology that challenged everything we thought we knew about dwarf planets. The probe then cruised deeper into the Kuiper Belt, snapping photos of Arrokoth and continuing its long goodbye as it drifts toward interstellar space, still powered and transmitting.
