All of Southeast Asia Has Eliminated Trachoma. Two Billion People Are Now Free of the Leading Infectious Cause of Blindness

Trachoma is caused by the bacterium Chlamydia trachomatis. Repeated infections scar the inner eyelid until the eyelashes turn inward, scratching the cornea with every blink until blindness results. It spreads through contact with infected discharge and through flies, and it thrives wherever access to clean water, sanitation, and medical care is limited. For generations it has been a disease of poverty, concentrated in the communities least able to address it.

The WHO's certification of Timor-Leste as having eliminated trachoma as a public health problem marks the moment the entire Southeast Asian region crossed the threshold. The path was methodical: Laos achieved elimination in 2017, Nepal in 2018, Myanmar in 2020, India in 2024. Vietnam, Cambodia, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, the Maldives, Bhutan, and Thailand had already met the standard. Timor-Leste was the last piece. A 2025 survey of 4,949 children aged one to five across all 13 of the country's municipalities found no evidence of transmission.

"I congratulate Timor-Leste and the entire South-East Asia Region on this historic achievement," said WHO Director-General Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus. The validation process is rigorous: multi-year surveillance, laboratory capacity reviews, house-to-house sampling. The milestone means that more than two billion people across the region now live with minimal risk of contracting trachoma, and the global goal of worldwide elimination by 2030 has taken a significant step closer.

A Feather Preserved in Dinosaur Dung May Explain Why Birds Survived the Asteroid Strike

In 2016, a paleontologist named David DeMar Jr. was doing fieldwork in Montana when he found a dark reddish-brown nodule about half the size of a golf ball. It turned out to be fossilized dinosaur dung. Inside it were multiple feathers, tiny fish scales from a gar, and leg bones from a hesperonithiform, an aquatic bird ecologically similar to a modern loon — and the earliest known avian lineage to abandon flight in favor of foot-propelled diving. The feathers inside that nodule are the best example of a bird feather ever preserved from the dinosaur age, and the first hesperonithiform feathers ever found.

What makes the feathers scientifically extraordinary is what they reveal about structure. Professor Jingmai O'Connor at the Field Museum of Chicago, who led the study, found that hesperonithiform feathers occupy a middle ground between the ancient feathers of early birds and the modern plumaceous feathers of birds alive today. That middle position, it turns out, may hold the answer to one of paleontology's great questions: why did some bird lineages survive the asteroid strike 66 million years ago and others didn't?

The hypothesis centers on insulation. When the asteroid hit, it triggered an impact winter that drove temperatures down catastrophically. The Neornithes, ancestors of all birds alive today, had more modern and efficient plumaceous feathers that would have provided superior insulation during that cold. Hesperornithiforms had feathers that were closer to the ancient end of the spectrum, possibly less efficient at retaining heat. They went extinct. Modern birds are here because their feathers kept them warm.

A 19th-Century Canal Dump in Cheshire Is Now Home to 64% of the UK's Rarest Breeding Waterbird

Woolston Eyes Nature Reserve in Cheshire, England, owes its existence to a Victorian engineering project. In the 1890s, workers constructing the 36-mile Manchester Ship Canal dredged 41 million cubic meters of material from the riverbed and dumped it on the floodplain alongside the River Mersey. What was left was an industrial wasteland of spoil heaps and stagnant water. The Woolston Eyes Conservation Group began managing the site in 1979, and in 1986 it was declared a Site of Special Scientific Interest by the UK government. Four decades of patient restoration later, something remarkable is happening on the newly created wetland islands.

The black-necked grebe is one of Britain's rarest breeding waterbirds, with beautiful ruby-red eyes and thin ochre-golden feathers. It has an unusual nesting strategy: it breeds in colonies alongside black-headed seagulls, using the gulls' natural aggression as a defensive shield. In 2023, four nesting pairs arrived at Woolston Eyes for the first time and produced 15 young. By 2025, 35 pairs had been recorded at the site, with 29 successfully nesting on the restored wetland.

Those 29 nesting pairs represent 64% of all breeding black-necked grebes in the United Kingdom. A site that began as a dump for canal construction waste is now the most important breeding location for one of Britain's most threatened waterbirds. The reserve also supports willow tits, grasshopper warblers, and pochards, all UK species of conservation concern. "The transformation of Woolston Eyes," said Gavin Thomas of the RSPB, "is a remarkable conservation success story."

A Park Ranger in Somerset Had Just Asked for a Sign. Then a Kingfisher Sat on Her Hand for 10 Minutes

Laura O'Brien, 24, is a park maintenance ranger for Frome Town Council in Somerset, England. One morning she was doing what rangers do, watering flowers along a stretch of riverbank, when she had a moment of reflection. She had just asked, quietly, for a sign. Moments later a flash of blue streaked toward her from the direction of the river.

The bird was a Eurasian kingfisher, one of Britain's most vividly colored and notoriously elusive birds. Kingfishers are typically gone before you have properly registered them, a blur of iridescent blue and orange moving too fast to follow. This one was different. It appeared to be moving strangely, possibly disoriented or slightly hurt. Laura held out her gloved hand. The kingfisher hopped onto it and stayed for ten minutes, looking around with what she could only describe as complete calm.

"I had just asked for a sign, then just moments later this happened," she told SWNS. "It was such a magical moment that I will never forget. I felt like Snow White!" She noted that the bird had an extraordinarily bright orange chest and that normally a kingfisher is nothing more than a flash of blue before it vanishes. "So I was just watering the flowers with this kingfisher on my finger." Her fellow rangers, she added, were all deeply jealous. She has since wondered whether she might head down to the river again to see if it recognizes her.
